Over the last 13 months the club has had a number of its swimmers competing in external competitions, taking on some of the most talented swimmers the region has to offer.
January 2011 saw Jess Willis, Callum Quigley, Luke Worthington, Tenniel Davis, Harley Tennant & Hannah Smith competing in the Central Lancs Prelims at Broughton. All of our swimmers achieved top ten finishes within their age groups, with four swimmers Luke, Callum, Harley & Hannah walking away with an array of medals for top three finishes. In May 2011, as a result of their efforts, two swimmers, Callum Quigley & Hannah Smith, were selected to represent Central Lancashire in a regional competition against a number teams from around the country. In June 2011 the Central Lancashire Championships were held in Bury. Once again our club was represented by six swimmers this time including Joe McCue. Outstanding performances were put in by all and once again gold, silver and bronze medals flowed. Proceedings were temporarily halted to allow a resounding rendition of ‘Happy Birthday’ for Jason Worthington by the Ashton fans. Shortly after, the sickening sound of Joe McCue smashing his hand on the edge of the pool with a misjudged turn, had the crowd reaching for sick bags. Despite this, he went on to compete and collect a number of medals for his efforts, as did other members of the squad. (Harley, Hannah, Callum & Luke) In October a relatively small team consisting of Harley, Tenneil, Jess, Joe & Hannah competed in the Manchester & District Championships. This event saw a change in the standard of competitors as most were of ‘squad’ level. However, once again within their respective age groups, saw them all featuring within the top ten places of their selected events. Tenneil’s excellent effort saw taking a bronze for 50m breaststroke. In November, swimmers competed in the Bolton Metro Xmas gala. The competition saw the return of Callum and it was not long till the Ashton team flexed it’s muscles and powered away to win a number of medals with Callum, Luke and Hannah leading the way. The smashing of PB’s was now becoming the norm for all. Last month our swimmers competed in the Bolton & Manchester age group championships. This competition saw some outstanding swims by Callum & Luke who both collected medals for their efforts. Personal bests times kept on tumbling, with Jess setting two & Hannah taking a whacking 16 seconds off her 100 metre IM. The club also benefited, with Xander O Neil, swimming under the club banner for the first time. He did us proud by winning a number of trophies and medals for distance events. In short, over the last 13 months, these swimmers have taken on and in some cases beaten some of the best swimmers in the region. Between them, they have won over thirty medals as a result of their hard work and dedication. They have represented this club with pride and raised the profile for this Club in general. They may be small in number, but they have achieved a great deal for themselves and the Club, for that they should be commended. Cat 2 swimmers are Luke Worthington, Tenniel Davis, Harley Tennant, Jess Willis, Hannah Smith, Joe McCue & Callum Quigley. |
